As I’ve said, I’ve been venturing back into my life’s work and something happened that has caused me to make an addition to my understanding of “fate” in astrology. I’ve said it before, the Yod configuration is the only fated aspect in astrology, and I’ve included a complete description of it later in this missive.
No, today I want to talk about what can feel ‘fated’ in astrological terms. It can happen when two people share a Sun and Moon in the same sign. The closer to exact conjunction the more powerful the feeling of fate.
I have experienced the pull of this configuration in my own life. My husband was a Scorpio with his Moon in Aries exactly conjunct my Sun. I can report that we went on exactly one date together and I never left his house. The pull of the attraction of Sun/Moon was that strong. [I know how crazy that story is, but I swear it’s true. If my mother were alive, she would testify that I left one afternoon and didn’t come back or tell her where I was for 2 years.]
The Sun is the energy pull here and the moon [that has no light of its own] is pulled to the Sun almost obsessively. Although it depends on the sign involved to determine how much of an obsession it will be. Another example that I experienced in my own life was a boyfriend with a Sun in Cancer and it exactly conjunct to my Moon in Cancer. It felt completely different than my relationship with my husband. In this instance, I was the one who is pulled to the energy of his Sun, and I was the obsessive one.
I have to say I liked it much better when I had the control [sun], but I have to admit I liked the feeling of being pulled to someone like that. It felt like destiny. That’s how it will feel to the Moon person. Like a destiny, or to put it in new-age terms. like a soul mate. The Sun does not feel it the same way, but compatibility itself is seductive and that is the Sun’s pull towards the relationship.
Now, there is another combination that I’m now calling ‘fated’ and I do not use that term lightly. When there are mutual Sun/Moon conjunctions.
An example is Sun in Aries and a partner’s Moon in Aries
And
A Sun in Cancer and a partner’s Moon in Cancer.
This will feel like soul mates. The balance of energy that each give to the other, and the understanding and compatibility each has with the Moon so close to another’s Sun will feel like it is fated. It will be instantaneous also. The energy works before the mind or emotions catch up. It’s a powerful energy exchange and becomes more powerful the closer to exact it becomes. However, just residing in the same sign will be powerful enough, closer to exact conjunction can feel overwhelming. It’s a powerful energy exchange that functions on an energy level, NOT an emotional, physical, or mental one. I’m not even sure if it is spiritual. It is energy alone and will be felt first as if a light switch went off in a room within you didn’t even know existed.
This energy exchange is so dynamic that it can be felt with complete strangers, even people you have not met in person. It doesn’t have to be romantic, it can be siblings or friends. Don’t get caught up in the western idea of soul mate. It does not always express in romantic relationships. But, it will always feel intimate [I am not talking sexual here, I am talking real intimacy.] Ever seen two friends that seem to be tied at the hip? Or, siblings that create lives that revolve around each other? Parent and child that defy understanding in their bond?
So, that’s my late in life correction on fated aspects in astrology. Below is the descriptions of a Yod and Composite Yod. This aspect is pretty much agreed upon regarding ‘fate’. It’s a long read, so take your time.
The Yod [the finger of God]
This not-to-common configuration occurs when at least two planets sextile one another while both quincunx a third planet, creating a large “Y” formation across the chart. This third planet (the apex point of the Yod) represents a highly significant principle requiring clearer and more purposeful focus of expression before this pattern can become functional. This apex planet becomes the prime focal point of the Yod. Its basic nature reveals much about the characteristic motivation determining the outer manifestation of this configuration.
The Yod has also been called the “finger of God” pattern.”
Although there is much discussion and argument among Astrologers, in general it is considered to be the ONLY fated aspect configuration. The life is driven in a particular direction to experience specific events. It has a very interesting way of operating. Besides the planets, aspects, signs, & houses the aspect has a tendency to lay dormant until activated. Transiting planets, planets by progression or by another individual can activate it. It can be activated at the midpoint between the sextiled planets or at the point opposite the midpoint (the planet quincunx to both sextiling planets) it does not usually become activated at the point of the sextiled planets. It can go UNACTIVATED ALSO. Sort of like a gift that is never unwrapped.
The entire configuration, Yod, called the “finger of God”, is in other words, a special or compelled purpose. This energy is compelling and often frustrating. The frustration comes with not being able to put your ‘finger’ on what it is that you are trying to accomplish or do. It comes from society’s messages that we must go to work every day and probably not enjoy it much to provide for our family and ourselves. It is a compelling force, almost obsessive, that leads us either to a life of frustrated and wasted efforts, or a higher plan of serving the Universe with our given gift.
Often it is such a strong compulsion and frustration; it colors the rest of the life significantly. Imagine if you will, a center of energy forcing out to 2 points at the same time and frequency, in such an ambiguous manner and against what society has taught us. This force of energy is waiting to be used. When not used, it merely shoots waves of hard to define spurts that we aren’t able to synthesize. This is how a Yod works.
However, when we start to dismiss society’s messages, and find our place, often through self-awareness and healing, we are then on an unstoppable course of destiny and purpose.
The opportunity is to let go, release, and sacrifice the ego. When we are caught in the energy of frustration that becomes the block itself. This is the call of the Yod; to let go of the frustration, the earthly need, the pride, to rise above, and take the path of least resistance.
When reviewing the nature of a Yod, let me just say that the fated nature of the journey itself should never be undervalued. There is no final destination or destiny that will arrive on the horizon and be the final disposition of the “fate”. It does not manifest in the big “ah ha” of self-realization or enlightenment.
It is the Journey itself that is the fate. I cannot emphasize this enough; it is the Journey itself that is the DESTINY.
There is also no “romantic” ‘happily ever after” to such aspects and events in life. They are fated for reasons that have nothing to do with the romantic notions of life, livingness and of meeting one’s “soul” mate and living happily ever after. It could happen of course, but that’s not the destiny. The journey itself is the fate, not the end result like a marriage, or great success. Those are by-products nothing more.
The idea of “fated” is somewhat contrary to Astrological Doctrine where by the dictum of ‘the planets to not compel, they only impel’ is set aside for those who are born with a natal Yod.
Unfortunately, there is very little written on this subject and what is written is mainly directed to “composite Yod’s”. By that I mean that two people come together and they form a Yod between their two charts. The examples of such occurrences give one pause for how much their lives were changed once they met.
Composite Yod’s (Examples are):
1. Bonnie & Clyde
2. Edward VIII & Wallis Simpson
3. Elizabeth Taylor & Richard Burton
4. Charles Manson & Susan Atkins
The thought on these types of Yod’s forming indicates that it is instantly life changing/altering, and that there is a fated destiny awaiting those involved.
Individual Yod’s:
In individual; charts, the same is true. You are aware of a path, but do not know how to walk it. The important thing with this aspect is that it is not the destination but the road traveled that is the destiny.
You are not supposed to be anywhere else but where you are right now. The aspect draws and propels you to make that journey. It can create general restlessness and a feeling of never being content.
The Yod itself, (if activated) makes it all the more compelling because those energies seek stability and the aspect demands that you keep traveling to an unknown destination for that security.
